It should have been gold

Kenny Egan lands another blow
Kenny Egan raised the hopes of our nation as he battled to the light heavyweight Olympic final in Beijing.  All that was standing in his way was hometown favourite Xiaoping Zhao.  Surely he could land the gold, couldn't he??

However, going into the final round Egan was behind but came out storming and landed some legitimate punches which the judges failed to score.  These scores could have landed Kenny the gold but alas it was not to be.

Even then president of Ireland, Mary McAleese had some encouraging words for our heroic fighter, "I am delighted to learn of Kenny's wonderful accomplishment today in Beijing," the President then continued "The people of Ireland are uplifted by this outstanding achievement which continues a tradition of Irish Olympic boxing excellence dating back to 1952."

So silver it was for Ireland and maybe it was a hometown decision, Paddy Power Bookmakers didn't think so and graciously paid out on all bets for Egan to win.
