| Eoin Rheinisch on his way to a fine finish |
Not many people outside of Ireland would have heard of Leixlip until local man Eoin Rheinisch made a daring run to almost snatch a medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics canoeing K-1 Slalom Final.
Having qualified in tenth place after the semi final run a superb final run put him into contention for a medal as his rivals fell all around him. But with Eoin standing in the gold medal position with the final three to go anything was possible.
The luck of the Irish deserted him unfortunately as all three made quicker and faultless runs to push him into fourth place. A time to be sad and upset?? Not for us Irish, fourth place may be the hardest position to finish in but the result was Irelands best ever in the event and surely put Leixlip onto the world map, a time for some Guinness!!
With The London Olympics of 2012 fast approaching maybe Eoin has a few tricks up his sleeve to bring home the medal he almost won in 2008, here's hoping that it's a gold one!!
