Wim Kieft and that goal

As Euro 2012 draws ever nearer itas time to cast our gaze back to Irelands final group game at Euro 88, a draw was all that was required to advance to the semi finals.  Having already beaten England and gaining a point against the mighty USSR team could we do the impossible against the talented Dutch.

If only it had gone in

Paul McGrath hit the post with a powerful header in the first half that could have given us an early lead and something to hold onto.  With the minutes ticking away however the Dutch began to throw the kitchen sink at us.  Our defence withstood the onslaught from Van Basten and co until Ronald Koeman hit what was probably the worst shot of his career with only eight minutes remaining.

Without the leg spin action on the ball (imagine, a cricketing term being used in a game of football) Wim Kiefts header would have  gone harmlessly wide for sure.  Such cruel luck for a spirited Irish team that showed no fear against the eventual winners of Euro 88.

Hopefully Ireland can go a step further and escape their group at this years tournament in Poland and Ukraine starting this weekend with game against Croatia......enjoy!!!!
