Gridlocked in Rome - Irelands last great hammer thrower??

Us Irish just never give up do we, well from what happened to John Lawlor before the hammer throw final of the 1960 Olympics in Rome is anything to go by then we certainly don't.

John Lawlor was one of our greatest ever hammer throwers and had a great chance to win gold in Rome until a traffic jam delayed him en route to the Olympic Stadium.  Instead of waiting for the traffic to ease up he took off and ran the last half mile to the stadium.

The traffic jam and half mile could have affected his performance but with Russian Vasily Rudenkov taking out the gold medal John came within inches or centimetres if you wish of a bronze medal finishing in a very respectable fourth place.
