St Patricks Day 2007, my brother just gets married, Ireland hammer Italy to lead the 6 Nations Championship and we were also on our way to beating Pakistan at the cricket World Cup. What could possibly go wrong, France needed to win by 24 points and England needed a miracle to deny us a first championship in almost 60 years.
A try by Scotland with five minutes of play left to play against France in Paris looked to have been enough for us until Elvis Vermeulen bundled over the line for the French with time up on the clock. Was it a try though, this tough decision was down, ironically, to Irishman Simon McDowell who was the video referee for the game.
In fairness it was a tough decision to make, you couldn't actually see the ball being grounded but maybe it was, we'll just never know. After a lengthy review the try was awarded, France won by 27 points and took the championship by the slimmest of margins on points differential.
We did take out the Triple Crown the week previous in Scotland with a 1 point victory so it wasn't all bad, I suppose it's a good thing that they now hand out a trophy for it (The Triple Crown) these days.
