John Treacy sprints home for silver

It's sort of an enduring image for me seeing John Treacy catch Great Britains Charles Spedding on the final bend of the 1984 Olympic Marathon inside LAs' Coliseum Stadium after 26 gruelling miles of racing.

He then powered away to finish in a time just under two hours and ten minutes with his arms outstretched having claimed the silver medal and becoming one of our countries sporting heros.

As he crossed the line RTEs' Jimmy Magee labelled him "the little man with the big heart" as he became Irelands 13th Olympic medalist and the first track and field medalist since Ronnie Delaney had won gold in Melbourne in 1956.

Another awesome moral victory for us, it wasn't gold but he showed great heart to sprint home for silver and give us all a moment to remember.  Here is a link to a short video of the end of the race on YouTube with commentary from The BBCs' David Coleman.
