Denied by the weather or lack thereof

Annaliese Murphy very nearly emulated the Flying Dutchmen of the 1980 Moscow Olympics in her first Olympic sailing final at Weymouth.  In a 30 minute 'medal' race Annalies was looking for a strong showing to earn herself an Olympic Medal coming into the race in joint second place.

It seemed, however, that 'The Luck of The Irish' deserted her as the wind stayed away allowing her vaunted opponents to pull away as the race entered its final stages.  Annaliese came home in fifth place for an overall placing of fourth, surely the hardest position to finish in such a huge race.

Still fourth place is something to be proud of (well I was over the moon with it to be honest) and it was our best performance at an Olympics sailing regatta since the Flying Dutchmen mentioned above.  With youth on her side and maybe a little bit of luck in four years time who knows, maybe we will see the Rathfarnham native take home the gold.
