After 40 years without an Ulster Senior Hurling Championship contested it was finally revived again in 1989 and duly won by the County of Antrim. In the All Ireland semi final they came up against Leinster champions Offaly who were favoured to advance to the final. Antrim however pulled off a major upset to win against all the odds and book themselves a date at Croke Park to play for The Liam McCarthy Cup.

It seemed however that the game and occasion were just too much for the men from Antrim and they fell to a heavy defeat to a superb Bobby Ryan led Tipperary side. In defeat it was a brave performance for The Saffrons as they did manage to score 3 goals and local Cushendall legend Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton (above right) knocked over two points of his own in only their second ever All Ireland final appearance.
A great 'moral' victory within our own sporting confines for Antrim who to date are still the only Ulster county to ever reach an All Ireland Hurling Final.
