An obscure quote from a Father Ted episode led me to former Neptune Rowing Club member Sean Drea who surely deserves a mention for his heroics at the single sculls final of The 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Drea, a native of Wells in Co. Carlow, was a World Championship silver medalist in 1975 and three time Diamond Sculls winner at The Henley Royal Regatta. He could have won gold at the1974 Worlds' but had to withdraw to have a kidney stone removed.
Things were looking good for his attempt to land Olympic Gold for Ireland in 1976 when he shattered the record over 2,000 meters in his semi final. The final however was less rewarding for Sean with a fourth place finish but deserving enough of a place in Irelands Hall of 'Great Moral Victories'.
