What can you say about the skeleton event, a bunch of lads throwing themselves down an ice track with very little protection on what I can only see as being a thin sliver of wood to lie on, crazy, insane or just plain madness. I digress however, lets take a trip back to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games at Salt Lake City for a look at another of our small nations moral victories. Ireland had never won a Winter Olympic medal of any kind, we only competed for the first time at the 1992 games, but one Irishman with an extemely long name dared to dream of changing all that.
Unfortunately Lord Clifton missed out on the bronze medal by less than a second and finished agonisingly close in fourth place but wrote himself into Irish sporting folklore with such a brave attempt in what can only be described as a completely insane sporting event. So no medal for ‘Clif’ or Ireland in 2002, maybe someday we will reach the promised land.
